Jefferson’s new 90-bed patient center fulfills promise, honors major donor

WASHINGTON TWP. – When Kennedy Health merged with Jefferson in 2017, one of the promises made by Thomas Jefferson University President Dr. Stephen Klasko was to have a new patient center built on the health system’s township campus.

On Tuesday, that promise was fulfilled when the ribbon was cut for the $184 million Silvestri Tower, a seven-story, 90-bed patient center. Klasko emphasized the need for the center in South Jersey during his remarks.

“In past, people would’ve had to go to Philadelphia or New York,” Klasko said. “And not only them, but their families can stay right here.”

The building is named after John Silvestri, who made a $5 million donation to Jefferson’s New Jersey branch, the largest donation in its history. Silvestri is the vice-chairman of the Jefferson-New Jersey Board of Trustees with more than 25 years of service to the company. He’s also the president of Site Development Inc., a Mount Laurel-based real estate firm.

Joined by his family, Silvestri credited his mother for keeping him involved with Jefferson for so long.

“Whenever I would get disenchanted or tired and I would consider calling it a day, she would always tell me to keep going and stay involved,” he said. “One day, I asked her, ‘But why should I stay?’ As only an Italian mom would say, ‘Well John, I like to see your picture on the wall when I go to the hospital.'”

New Jersey Department of Health Commissioner Judith Persichilli also attended the ribbon-cutting and used her time at the podium to thank Silvestri for his generosity.

“Mr. Silvestri’s financial support for Jefferson Health will leave a lasting legacy on this organization in South Jersey,” she said. “But make no mistake, it is not nearly as important as his time and his commitment and his appreciation for Jefferson-New Jersey, formerly Kennedy, and his community.”

The 240,000-square-foot building features an ICU with 30 beds, a new same-day surgery pre-and-post-op unit, a rooftop helistop, and family space in rooms and waiting areas. An 850-space parking garage was also built next to the tower.

Washington Township Mayor Joann Gattinelli said she already had firsthand knowledge on the level of care patients receive in the new center.

“I’ve unfortunately had some situations with my mom within the last four years,” Gattinelli said, “and she’s been pretty much all over South Jersey, I have to say. It was a pleasure, and she didn’t want to come home. I had trouble getting her back out of here.”

AtlantiCare plans $75 million Mainland Campus expansion

AtlantiCare is planning a multi-year $75 million expansion of AtlantiCare Regional Medical Center Mainland Campus in Pomona.

The project, announced July 13, will include the addition of two floors and approximately 35,000 square feet to the existing Meadow Pavilion of the campus. An additional 23,000 square feet of the Meadow Pavilion and additional areas of the hospital will be renovated.

The project will add 50 private medical/surgical rooms to the facility, 12 of which will have bedside dialysis capability, and a new intensive care unit with 14 private rooms will be added.

A 12-bed dedicated observation unit will be created, negative pressure capacity will be increased, and elevator capacity will be increased.

“This expansion is one of the many ways we are continuing to meet the needs of our community,” said ARMC Chief Operating Officer Larisa Goganzer in a prepared statement. “Our goal is always to provide an exceptional patient experience and the highest quality of care. We’ve based this plan on feedback from our patients, staff, and providers. We’ve designed around our best practices and others in the health care industry. This expansion will enhance the efficiency with which we deliver care. The plan positions us to continue to provide high-quality care and to be prepared for future health care emergencies.”

The project is currently in the design phase after being approved by the board of trustees in June. It will move next to the regulatory approvals phase. Construction is anticipated to begin in the first half of 2022 and concluded in 2024.

The first phase will include the construction of the two new floors, and in Phase 2 will come the Meadow Pavilion renovation into a new, expanded ICU. Phase 3 will include renovating the existing ICU on the second floor of the Harbor Pavilion to become a dedicated 12-room Observation Unit.

Virtua Scraps Plans for New $1B South Jersey Hospital Complex, Will Pursue Major Renovations at Two Existing Medical Centers

Virtua Health has scrapped plans to build a new hospital in Westampton and instead unveiled a multi-year “transformation” project that will result in major renovations and enhanced services for two of its South Jersey medical centers. 

Those two hospitals are Virtua Our Lady of Lourdes Hospital in Camden and Virtua Memorial Hospital in Mount Holly. A Virtua spokesman said the health system is still finalizing its plans and projections, but the investment will be “significant” at each campus.

Virtua acquired Our Lady of Lourdes and Lourdes Medical Center in Willingboro from Lourdes Health System two years ago.

Several years prior to that deal, Virtua had embarked on an ambitious plan to create a $1 billion health care campus in Westampton. The Burlington County project was planned along 100 acres of property it acquired between Route 541 and Route 630. It was to include a more than $500 million replacement hospital for the aging Virtua Memorial Hospital.

Virtua is now adjusting its plans in a big way.  “The health systems that thrive are the ones that adapt to the dynamic shifts occurring around us while adhering to their core values and mission,” said Dennis W. Pullin, Virtua’s CEO.

Deborah Heart & Lung Center gets $88M government loan for expansion project

The U.S. Department of Agriculture has approved an $88.2 million loan to the Deborah Heart and Lung Center, funding the Burlington County specialty hospital said will provide the “final piece” of capital needed for its planned $100 million expansion project.

The USDA loan is funded through the federal agency’s Community Facilities Direct Loan and Grant Program. https://dd173b8b3b2efb01fe7ea03f73dd0c08.safeframe.googlesyndication.com/safeframe/1-0-38/html/container.html Deborah, in Browns Mills, will used the funds to convert its double-occupancy inpatient rooms to private suites, construct a new inpatient tower with individual patient rooms, and for other initiatives. The project also includes upgrades to the hospital’s cardiac catheterization and electrophysiology labs and a new pharmacy cleanroom.

“We had this project on the drawing board before the pandemic and even with the enormous difficulties and stresses placed on health care during the past year, our team forged ahead with our planning for the future,” said Joseph Chirichella, the CEO of Deborah. 

The medical center, which specializes in heart, lung and vascular care, expects to begin construction on the expansion project within the next few months. Construction is tentatively scheduled to be completed in late 2022 to coincide with Deborah’s 100th anniversary. 

The three-floor addition at the hospital will be constructed on top of existing hospital space, and will include two floors with 18 private, critical-care rooms on each floor and a third floor dedicated to mechanical space. This project will give the hospital a total of 95 beds. 

According to the USDA, nearly 800,000 rural residents fall within Deborah’s service area.

“Although our Community Facilities Program can help provide financial support to many different essential community projects, those projects that improve the health and safety of our residents would certainly be among the most important,” said Brandon Pfeilmeier, acting state director of New Jersey for the USDA, in a statement. “Having access to high quality medical service is critical to the future of our rural New Jersey communities.“ 

The Deborah Hospital Foundation’s ongoing fundraising efforts for the project have brought in about $16 million. That figure includes a $5 million donation, the largest single amount given by an individual donor to the medical center, from Gregory Olsen. Olsen sits on Deborah Hospital Foundation’s board and is CEO of Princeton-based GHO Ventures. In 2005, he became the third private citizen to travel to the International Space Station after securing medical clearances from Deborah pulmonologist Dr. David Murphy.
